Constar is known to most under her DJ name Connie. A genuine multi-faceted artist, Constar is relentless in her activities and doesn’t seem to ever get tired. During the day Connie is hard at work but as soon as night comes and shadows expand into gloaming, Connie starts drumming away for three different bands, DJing for hundreds of people – being NYC’s hottest – and producing super tracks at her studio. How does she keep up? We all remain wondering!
Connie grew up in Queens, NY where she spent most of her life apart from a few years in San Francisco. Her gigs however have taken her all over the sphere. Today, she is one of the very few girls to spin in NYC, which she defended proudly for a long time as she used to give DJ classes to other girls! On the weekends, she also organized sweet all girl afternoon sessions at Brooklyn’s famous record store, Halcyon. But as night falls, Connie puts on her boots and hat, and warms up the twilight family, preparing it for long daze and dance rituals. Connie is at the control, she beats the drum, sets the rhythm and holds the members of her tribe at her fingertips.
After seeing the banging “Red Hot” – her first released production – become the all-favorite track on Airdrop’s Extraction US compilation, it is a natural step for Connie to slip once again into her Constar outfit, and release this time her first record, the Sunset Tribe EP. Here, Constar does what she does best, take her clan on a ride through different skylines, from the shores of Bali in Indonesia to the Chinese inland mountains. Indeed, in “Sunset Tribe” the careful listener will hear parts of a Kecak ceremony – pronounced “KEH-chahk”, also known as the Ramayana Monkey Chant – a form of Balinese musical drama, that roots in a traditional trance-inducing exorcism dance. A piece usually performed by a circle of hundreds of men percussively chanting “cak” while throwing up their arms, depicting a battle between the monkey Vanara and the evil King Ravana…
Phoenixxx strikes the cord! Using elements and melodies of traditional Chinese instruments, the Pipa, Guzheng and Erhu, Constar takes our journey even further East. Allying a bumpy and light-hearted groove to the depth and gravity of the instruments used, Constar also offers an exploration into her balanced mind and soul. Bringing the witchcraft even further, who better than the craziest wizard-duo electronic music has ever come across, Voodeux! Celebrating the release of their debut album on Mothership, Voodeux – aka Tanner Ross and James Watts – create their very own blend of magic potion that no spirit – good or bad – could resist. Simply spellbinding and savage, Voodeux know the cerebrum’s fluids inside out, and will work them through their supernatural enchantments!
