Berlin-Atonal-2013

The legendary Berlin Atonal festival returns to the capital of innovative music after a 23 year hiatus.

The history of Berlin Atonal begins in November 1982. Set up at SO36 in Kreuzberg, the Atonal festival became ground-zero for altogether new forms of musical experience; Einstürzende Neubauten, Sprung aus den Wolken, Malaria, Notorische Reflexe, Alu, White Russia, Didaktische Einheit and many other like-minded musical pioneers used Berlin Atonal to launch their entirely novel ideas about the possibilities of sonic expression.

Now, in 2013, Berlin Atonal returns updated to a city that has itself changed. However, the spirit remains resolute: to resist the trends of the mainstream, to provide platforms for experimentation, to support those who want to break with trite and lazy habits of watching and listening.

Dilo-ethereal-Lres

Three years after “Waheira”, Dilo comes back with a double album released in two parts: “Ethereal #1” and “Ethereal #2″.

The multifaceted artist, real name Franco Di Lorenzo, also known for his outings as Monotax, Elephant Pixel and Cascabel Gentz, manages to tie together all his different projects to present this second long player released under his Dilo moniker to create something intricate and advanced, something truly Ethereal.

Flowing effortlessly, tinged with poppy voices and dreamlike arrangements, real guitar licks kick the clicks and microscopic arrangements which show off restless Dilo´s attention to detail get intertwined with vocal snippets, crackled and forward-pushing grooves: a trippy cosmic experience that might be ethereal but not transient.

Words by Chinua Green

In 2007, Chris and Steve Martinez, at 15 and 18 years old, released their debut single My Rendition EP on mentor Dennis Ferrer’s Objektivity.  It was an underground hit: Dance magazine cover articles, Miami parties with Diddy (along with Claude VonStroke, who we interviewed at EZ 2010), and more EPs followed.  Four years later, fresh off their set at Made Event’s 2011 Electric Zoo Festival in New York City, Airdrop’s Chinua Green catches up with the two brothers and talk touring, paving their own path while respecting their New York musical roots, and Hip-Hop supergroups.

Whether you’ve gone to see Deadmau5’s premium-priced Hallowe’en one-offs at Roseland Ballroom, spent the morning hours pulsating in synch to the slinky basslines of the Marcy Hotel, been a Cielo Deep Space regular since before Pioneer CDJ-1000’s existed, can name all the resident DJs at Club Love’s Dub War (R.I.P.), or threw a bottle-service Pacha NYC birthday party to the sound of Victor Calderone, you’ve heard of Electric Zoo.  Without a doubt.  Now in its third year, Made Event’s Electric Zoo festival has been able to attract electronic dance music aficionados of all stripes so successfully that on Labor Day weekend (Sept. 2-4), Randall’s Island morphs into a fairly accurate profile of the Tri-State area’s EDM ecosystem.
