THE CONCEPT

Extraction is a compilation series that travels the world to showcase emerging and already established electronic music artists. Each compilation provides a platform for a different region to unite music and scene, which allows the artists to grow together as part of the international electronic music community.

THE ORIGINS

The first volume of Extraction was the result of time spent and connections made in Argentina. In recent years, many renowned artists have emerged from this beautiful country. Despite the increased attention they get, there still are many difficulties for local artists trying to get exposure in the international scene. The earliest Extraction compilation, which was released in March 2008 aimed to cast a spotlight on established Argentines, we love, and new artists everybody ought to discover.

Extraction Argentina was a great success, gaining attention and support from all over the world. Now, AIRDROP continues the Extraction series showcasing new exciting communities and artists, setting off in our new home, the United States.

THE PRESENT

From Disco in New York, to House in Chicago, to Techno in Detroit, the United States have been at the forefront of the worldwide dance music scene for almost four decades. While European and Latin American sounds have dominated recent productions, the re-emergence of the stateside underground electronic music scene makes this a perfect time to refocus on the country where it all began.

Economic pressure and mainstream ignorance challenging U.S artists trying to gain wide exposure has pushed many of the finest artists from The States’ and labels to go to Europe and Latin America. Nevertheless, today – possibly more than ever – the U.S scene is pushing towards headlining a global revival. With international artists, promoters and label owners settling in cities like New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Portland and even Boston, the U.S is growing importance to international electronic music lovers. For Extraction U.S we have carefully compiled this new generation of artists on the rise: Artists who have gained exposure for their exceptional music or performances but whose full potential has not yet been recognized by the international community. In some respects many of these artists shaping their local communities are hidden gems – until now.

Sunday is Cool for the Degenerates

March 30, 2009

p1040021

Despite not having been able to go to as many, or anywhere near all the parties, Sunday School for Degenerates was the most exciting. With so much anticipation, no other event gets as much pre-WMC hype. Everyone wants to know who is playing Sunday School and in many ways it influences the other party promoter decisions.

Made Event, founded by Laura de Palma and Mike Bindra has rapidly become a big name in the event production industry. They have produced events promoting some of the biggest commercial dance music acts like Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten and Victor Calderone, but this has not stopped them from promoting events like Save the Cannibals and Sunday School for Degenerates, which appeal to the less mainstream (to put it nice and simple) with talents like Damian Schwartz, Steve Bug, Seth Troxler, Cassy, and many more. Regardless of the DJ spinning or the crowd attending, Made Event has shown consistency in properly producing events, love it or hate it.

p1040012

This year’s edition started on the Saturday to make sure everyone got there in time for Sunday’s lessons. Unfortunately, a few acts were unable to make it, which is part of the whole Miami thing, but a Tobi Neumann vs Adultnapper did help make up for Mathias Kaden’s absence. Like nearly every other event this year in Miami, something had to come up, but fortunately for them it had nothing to do with permits, police or the bureaucracy, but the rain, the unstoppable high-powered jungle-fever-rain!

Check us out chilling drinking a beer under the bus, where my beautiful Masomenos t-shirt got oiled! (Dam, I don’t know how I do it but this is not the first party I leave with oil stains on my shirt, seriously. The sun finally came back and everyone was happy, including Cassy who got to close up the party with her irresistable vinyl only set. The rays of fire even brought Larry a few lovely ladies…

ANDRÉS ZACCO & PAULO in ROSARIO
AD 007 SEATED HOPPING RELEASE

March 17, 2009

happysunday

Everyone, I said, EVERYONE, read on!! AIRDROP has found for you the recipe for PURE HAPPINESS! And the best part, it is really extremely simple:

- take one beautiful city located in Argentina: Rosario
- add to it some gardens overlooking the river while the sun sets: Los Jardines de Hildegarda
- mix it up with the bluesiest grooves ANDRÉS ZACCO and PAULO have in their boxes
- add the last spice: girls doing what they do best: being beautiful

Cook all of this together for a few hours until the night becomes a little old and there you go: ANDRÉS ZACCO’s SEATED HOPPING EP RELEASE PARTY!!

Indeed, AD 007 is ANDRES ZACCO’s first record on AIRDROP, and Hildegard only knows what honour, pleasure and excitement it is for us to announce what we deeply consider as the most electrifying 12″ on AIRDROP.

Party Hibernation is over!

March 13, 2009

Ok, we all know that for the most part over these past few months we have not partied every weekend or gone to every big name who has come to town, but those days are over! Now comes the non-stop party-planning and attending from every promoter in NYC and beyond. With Miami only a week away (less for some) everyone is pretty eager to party. Every city gets animated in the week before and after WMC.

NYC is no different as the reSOLUTE crew put together their Hell & Heaven party featuring none other then DJ Hell, Peter Kruder and John Selway to represent the dark side and then Anja Schneider, Jeremy P Caulfield, Elon and Connie for heaven. This definitely seems like it will be as wild as their Circoloco party back in October.

AIRDROP pres. A NIGHT WITH DIRTYBIRD
New York City – Saturday March 14th ’09

March 3, 2009

gradientairdropevite

AIRDROP & GRADIENT present A NIGHT WITH DIRTYBIRD

Straight from the west coast with the signature sound and flavor, come two of Dirtybird’s finest stars: Christian Martin and the rumbling J.Phlip fresh off her production debut this year. Both of them are stars of the San Francisco nightlife and the afternoons in Golden Gate Park where Claude VonStroke started throwing the sickest outdoor BBQ parties imaginable with the crew.

As one of the main people behind Dirtybird, Christian Martin has produced several top tracks on his own as well as collaborating with his brother Justin Martin and Claude VonStroke himself, who together have created a new type of sound influenced a great deal by hyphy. You will soon find out why!

J.Phlip, the newest addition and also now the first ‘bird’ in the Dirtybird crew has been Djing in San Francisco for several years and I think its fair to say it all came naturally to her. She produced a track that made major noise when dropped at WMC last year and was since released on vinyl, but rumor has it she is still working on the “rights of passage” to officially join the crew…

To make it a showcase night we had to bring down Tanner Ross from Boston, who splits his time and musical vision between big tech house hyphy bounce and the dark stripped down techno sounds he provides to Mothership as half of Voodeux.

Opening up for the night out will be Soul Clap, who has just released their Puppy Crack EP on AIRDROP with a Mikael Stavostrand remix that has left everyone in awe from Sammy Dee, Alland Byallo to Dario Zenker and Davide Squillace. They are also known to make ladies booties shake to old classics and future hits.

If the music itself was not enough, be prepared to leave traditional venues and come discover a new space. We will have a full bar, prepared with a few specially crafted drinks by a very special chef that has been making the cocktails longer than we have been alive.

AIRPOD 21 – TANNER ROSS

March 1, 2009

airpod20tannerross

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We haven’t posted an episode for a minute and in order to be forgiven we are super excited to send you today a little treasure of a mix from a pearl of an artist: Tanner Ross‘ Live and Uncut @ 71 Aldie. But first let us remind you of all the different sounds of the man who has more facets than a disco ball! Indeed, Tanner Ross has different aliases depending on his musical mood: while on the one hand his Marcel Wave moniker is characteristic of a sunny and somewhat deep atmosphere – you can find his latest Marcel Wave-signed production as the opening track for our last EXTRACTION US compilation – on the other hand his Voodeux alter ego – with partner James Watt – translates into a spookey-yet-groovey stripped down techno sound.

You probably have heard and seen some of the huge cloud of buzz growling around their most recent release – the Bones EP on Mothership. Bones has been receiving the praises of the likes of MANDY, Kiki or Nic Fanciulli. The EP includes two perfectly engineered blood-thirsty monsters that are destroying the longest and widest dancefloor this planet has to offer. Tanner Ross has been preparing a series of treat for us, avid listeners, to savour bit after beat all along 2009. Don’t forget to breathe.

If after listening to this monster mix, you want to hear more and live, then come to Dirtybird Showcase party on March 14th where Tanner will play alongside Christian Martin, J.Phlip and Soul Clap. Check this little flash evite designed by Gradient Magazine’s designer Matt Fried – You can RSVP here for the event.
