Print

AIRDROP celebrates the beginning of its 2nd year releasing records and putting on parties with our favorite artists. February 8th will be no exception as we gather some of AIRDROP’s closest friends and DJs to celebrate our very own Paulo’s Birthday!

On this special occasion, we are delighted to bring you some of the best DJs and producers from NYC and Boston, who make AIRDROP such a unique, fun and awesome sounding entity.

To start off the afternoon along with a nice glass of apple cider with its favored additive- rum of course, we will have Crazy Larry Vs Taimur, Soul Clap and Paulo, each playing their finest tunes. You are also encouraged to enjoy the BBQ that has been specially catered for the festivities.

As the evening takes us to its darker moments we will head back downstairs to the club with Tanner Ross, Sergio Santos and Connie, all taking turns at bringing the party to new heights, taking Paulo along for the joyride.

We are also very happy and thankful to have the opportunity to do this here at Bar 13, since it is the place that always allowed us to showcase our music without any hesitation and giving us total freedom to have a wild time…

AIRPOD 20 – MIKAEL STAVÖSTRAND

January 22, 2009

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

For AIRPOD’s 20th episode, we are honoured to welcome the live recording of an artist we hold dear in our hearts: Mikael Stavöstrand. This was recorded in San Francisco in December 2008 at the occasion of the second installment of Auralism Records’ brand new monthly – Aural Therapy – happening every 3rd Friday at the newly refurbished Paradise Lounge.

For those of you who weren’t at our party at The Bunker on the 12th of December, with the performances of Soul Clap and Mikael himself – we are also very excited to announce the coming of Soul Clap’s new record “Puppy Crack”. The record features an incredible remix by Mikael Stavöstrand that you can preview right here – close to the beginning of this podcast episode.

More details about the record coming soon but we can already tell you that “Puppy Crack” is a potent dance drug and should immediately be banned to avoid further brain damage. Dripping into your drainage like some highly potent acid, the original version of the track breaks down into the wonkiest mayhem that clubbers’ ears have heard in a long time!

You will have to call in the ambulance and hope the doctor saving you when you overdose is Mikael Stavöstrand: he is just such a fine balancer and knows how to dose right: “Puppy Crack” becomes a deep entrancing affair with squelching noises and hypnotic synths that underline squeaking and clicking effects. Slowly the whole affair culminates in an evil addiction you did not even notice you developed!

AD 005 – DILO – POST VENDAVAL EP

January 21, 2009

[a]pendics.shuffle: “Lovin’ all 3 tracks! My favorite are Temporal original first off and then the remix! Sickness…Dark and nasty…Dilo never lets down!”

DJ Three: “Nice release for Dilo. ‘Temporal’ Original and ‘Post Vendaval’ are in the box. Full support on ‘Post Vendaval’

Tim Green: 8/10 – Favorite: Alka_Rex Remix

Someone Else (Foundsound): “Thanks! Super nice release. Dark! I like Post Vendaval the most!”

Jorge Savoretti
(Esperanza) : “I love Post Vendaval!”

Kon Gabron (Adjunct): “Oh Yeah!! Will be dropping this for the peoples for sure!!”

Nico Purman (Vakant): “I like the Originals. Post Vendaval: dark/deep adventures”

Tim Xavier: “9/10 I totally support this!”

Seph: “8/10 its nice to hear a refreshing sound once in a while. this is the case in the original and remix versions of Temporal. definately a stormer! wipidee boim dam tung!!”

Kate Simko: “9/10Love Dilo’s original mix of Temporal. Very deep and druggy- will play!”

“Temporal” starts with a light shower of acidy rain that poisons the mind and while a deep synth grinds the body. Evil, droning, and heavy, it crawls upon you and makes you run on the spot. But help is at hand: Alka_Rex pick up the track with his long saber teeth and dumps it into the den of dancey despair… Their remix is as bouncy and fresh as a jiggling set of space balls dangling on the key chain of the great designer. Last but not least comes “Post Vendaval”: Slow, morphing and infectious, graced with a dark voice and giant reverbs that undermine the best intentions, this track sounds as evil as it is melodic. Oooooops, Dilo did it again…

A1. TEMPORAL (ORIGINAL MIX)
A2. TEMPORAL (ALKA_REX REMIX)
B. POST VENDAVAL

SUN 25th JAN – MICHAL HO – BOSTON

January 20, 2009

2009-01-251

Michal Ho is best known for dabbling in the studio with fellow countryman Samim as Samim & Michal, but he also makes solo 12″s, popping up on recent mix CDs by Steve Bug and Matthias Tanzmann, while his live laptop shows have landed him headline spots in London and New York this past year. 2008 was a busy year for him, between his releases on Petite and Tuning Spork, he also received remixes by Inxec or even Adam Beyer! The following words are taken from Bjorn Schaeffner’s interview for RA:

“Michal Ho has a knack for sampling. His curiousity about sound extends across different genres, too. Yes, this is not your average minimal techno guy. He’s experimented with hip hop, drum n bass, electronica, jazz, dub, dubstep and house. His techno productions have been released on labels such as Get Physical, Contexterrior or local imprint Stattmusik. And they have earned him enthusiastic responses by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and M.A.N.D.Y.

Aside from containing samples of everything from his kitchen appliances to his neighbour’s fisticuffs, Ho’s oddly titled album Screw the Coffeemaker is a study in percussion: a long and meandering trip into the groove-heart of contemporary dancefloor music. A likeable, soft-spoken type with a deep, charismatic voice, Mr. Ho in person is far from your average sound nerd. And he’s not boring either: he’s just as comfortable chatting away about the Dada movement as Technotronic. Or coffee making.”

Paulo will have the pleasure to open this exceptional night. Who said Sunday was an early night ?Read more here:

[AD DIG 006] – CAPE – LE POST EP

Fernando Cappelletti aka Cape – pronounce [cà-pé] – is originary of Rosario, the beautiful capital of the province of Santa Fe, which stands right on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, north of Buenos Aires. Born in 1985, Cape discovered house music when he was 11, with tunes like Van Helden’s Funk Phenomena or Inner City’s hits, he immediately identified with the genre while feeling his feet moving and twisting and the groove slowly entering his core.

In his formative years, he also develloped a strong appreciation of rock while learning to play the guitar and listening to Depeche Mode, Sonic Youth, Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols, offering him a great knowledge of contemporary music. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that Cape discovered Ricardo Villalobos’ creations and a whole new dimension of electronic music, which left him speechless. He then started following Franco Cinelli in clubs like El Faro or El Sotano, legendary clubs of their home town. Some experiences which left a permanent mark on him.

Cape naturally started producing and received the great help of his city neighbours and friends Nico Purman, Franco Cinelli, Lucas Mari, Jorge Savoretti and Andres Zacco, letting this clear Rosario sound to impregnate his productions. Also following the influences of Laurent Garnier, Robert Hood, Basic Channel, Speedy J or Terrence FM on one side and Cabanne, Luciano, Perlon, Mathew Jonson or Baby Ford on the other, Cape creates an interesting and rich blend of techno and house with dub patterns and Detroit sonorities.

It is a real honour for us to announce today the release of the first productions of who has become one of our favourite emerging artists.

ANNOUNCING TIEFSCHWARZ – FEB 25th

January 19, 2009

2009-01-25

Tiefschwarz was formed in 1996 by two brothers – Alexander and Sebastian Schwarz – who have been successful DJs for over a decade. Peter Hoff, who runs the Benztown studios in Stuttgart, completes the Tiefschwarz production team. Ali and Basti came up with the name for their project after a DJ gig. Tiefschwarz, which is German for ‘deep black’, is a mixture of their last name, Schwarz, and their love for deep house. Besides their work as resident DJs, Ali and Basti have been travelling together throughout Europe and overseas since 1995. They’ve played at countless major events and the most popular clubs in both Germany and Switzerland (Zürich, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basel, etc.) as well as in major foreign cities, such as Miami (W.M.C.), New York, Washington, Melbourne, Sydney, Prague, Sarajevo, Amsterdam, Brussels, Antwerp, Rimini, Stockholm, London, Leeds, Sheffield, Ibiza, etc.

After six years of DJing and promoting, the two brothers began producing their own tracks. They co-founded the “continuemusics” label in 1996, on which their first single, “24 seven,” with remixes by Boris Dlugosh and Michi Lange, was released along with four other tracks.Tiefschwarz have remixed around 30 tracks for artists such as Ultra Naté, Byron Stingily, Jam & Spoon, Jennifer Paige, Randy Crawford, Master At Work, Earth Wind and Fire, Shakatak, Mousse T., AWA band, Whirlpool Prod., Sabrina Johnson and Sharon Philips. The name Tiefschwarz stands high alongside other legendary German acts such as Ian Pooley, Dixon, Jazzanova, Rainer Trüby, Ata and Vincenzo. As DJs, they have gained one of the greatest reputation on the international house scene and it is an honour for us to receive them Wednesday February 25th at the Phoenix Landing!

AIRPOD 19 – NICOLAS JAAR’s LIVE SET

January 14, 2009

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Nicolas Jaar – 18 years old – was born in New York. Soon after his birth, he moved to Santiago de Chile, where he bathed in Latin influences and indigeneous musical traditions that hold a determinant place in his productions. Nicolas will eventually come back to his birthplace as a teenager. Haunted by Mulatu Astatke, Erik Satie, Ezekiel Honig and Villalobos’ “Thé au Harem d’Archimède”; Nicolas started to make organic electronic music in 2004 at the young age of 14. Last year he debuted with “The Student EP” on Wolf and Lamb Music with remixes by Seth Troxler and Kasper.

He is now studying music cognition and philosophy at Brown University in Rhode Island. Nicolas has a few releases coming up, including some remixes by Ryan Crosson and a very special track that closes AIRDROP’s new volume of the Extraction compilation series – releasing February ’09. Needless to say, you will be sure to have many more opportunities to appreciate his creative genius. But as of now, Nicolas urges you to listen to his music instead of reading these mere words. It is with extreme pleasure that we are posting this incredible live set that Nicolas Jaar has been crafting with the most careful attention and subtle taste.

So come on in without waiting any longer, and join the ceremony…

MWT – JANUARY 14th – CRAZY LARRY

January 13, 2009

2009-01-14-450

CRAZY LARRY (Wagon Repair/ Cheap Sunglasses – US)

With no rave scene and virtually no radio support in most American markets, kids like Crazy Larry were forced to discover the wonders of dance music on their own accord. Hailing from Denver, Colorado, Larry Ursini is a young talent that has no fear when it comes to new technology and embraces it fully. Upon graduating from high school Larry enrolled in the Audio Engineering program at CU Denver. He also started doing his own Live PA in January of 2006, debuting in NYC for his closest friend in dance music, Taimur Agha. The live performance incorporates his actual drum machines; live home made plug-ins, and even the Nintendo Wii! Larry also teamed up with Pier Bucci while he was in town for a gig, and they subsequently released a joint EP under the Glacier moniker for Wagon Repair. If you’re after quality rather than chart topping hits, you’ll definitely want to give Crazy Larry a listen. Watch out for his upcoming record dropping on AIRDROP in 2009…
