Get ready for a new concept for NYC party people. You are used to partying everywhere but on a “ship without a captain”. The party is also 12 to 12 and from the picture sent out by ReSolute it looks like we may see the sunrise along the river.
July 3rd and Independence Day celebrations are also going to be big so save up for that with Damian Lazarus at Love with BLK/ Market Membership and a 48 hour minimoo independence party. More details will come.
Nick Chacona from XLR8R writes about Soulclap and AirDrop’s two first release
AD001 - The Giraffe and AD002 - die Ente ! Wooop !
This is what the article says:
“As a Bronx-born New Yorker, it’s not really in my blood to say that Boston is representin’ in any way, but considering the magnitude of the first releases from the new AirDrop imprint, it looks like they’re in the midst of a real (tea) party. Both releases come from Soulclap, the duo of Cnyce and DJ Elyte. The label’s inaugural release, “The Giraffe,” is a limited-edition colored-vinyl 10″ that features a mix from Franco Cinelli that’s straight out of Lee Curtis‘ twisted tech-house playbook. The second single, “die Ente,” also keeps things on the deep-tech tip initially, then launches into some serious early ’90s-style synth-sax house business that could fit easily into Luciano’s and Quentin Harris‘ sets. Boston’s hero of the moment, dirtybirds’s Tanner Ross, is enlisted here on mix duties, and utilizes some highly reverbed crystalline synth tones and thunderous bass growls to full modern-rave effect.”

Last Friday Night at Cocoliche was one of these nights that you don’t even need to promote. Noone really sent flyers or invitations, yet everyone knew this was it. One of these nights when the club stays packed until 9AM. One that makes you randomly smile when you think about it by yourself in the bus during the week after. Put shortly… an other-worldly night!
The party was hosted at Cocoliche and was organised by Qunita Sol, the Chilean agency that was behind Luciano’s and Ricardo Villalobos‘ revelations. However, this time around it was for Bruno Pronsato and Franco Cinelli to take over the controls of the tunnel.
Bruno and Franco have met and been friends for quite a few years now. In November 2005, they also released the Picaro EP on the German label Milnor Modern, regrouping three bomb tracks featuring their habitual genius programation, dirty vocals on one and irresisitible hypnose on all.
The music on Friday was the best we heard in a long time here. Bruno Pronsato created the most intimate and aestethic environment, playing perfectly with his different rhythm patterns and occasional voices… so seducing. A genuine journey inside the master’s realm.
That was the part for the mind…
… and its when Franco took over the decks and knobs that my feet couldn’t hold themselves anymore! Develloping a clear and flawless old school acid house techno vision, Franco dropped some gems like Tobias Freund’s Street Knowledge, or Luciano’s new version of Inner City’s Good Love… ¡¡¡BOMB!!! Even JayDee’s Plastic Dream was inserted right at the perfect time.
Time, time, time… I completely forgot about that! Great sign! So when I went out of the Coco at 9AM… el mundo se habia desaparecido! Te gusta? … Si! Muchisimo! Gracias Franco y Bruno!!!
(IT MUST BE NOTED THAT PAT FONTES IS MISSING FROM THIS PICTURE- WHY? because he is hardcore to the core and had to be back in Boston awake and functional at 10AM in his newly promoted job)
First of all, we would like to thank everyone who made the AirDrop die Ente release party possible, the friends who did show up, the friends who didn’t but tried their hardest, the artists for making the music and coming down to play it, obscenenyc and brooklynvegan for putting out the word and of course Memo from Bar 13 for doing things right.
The night was great despite having most of NYC’s electronic music lovers still under the Detroit spell, most were able to come party for a few hours. The night started off with legendary Pat Fontes who played beautifully and got the dancers warmed up for Sergio Santos who also played great ending his set with Tanner Ross’ die Ente remix, which people definitely started to go crazy to. (A dark video to go with the dark track will be here shortly)
At this point Bar 13 has grown a moving and grooving dancefloor eager to absorb all the music possible. Tanner Ross now steps behind the decks and attacks as directly as possible with his Dirtybird roots and gets people jumping with Justin Martin’s Cicada remix (such a dope track). Then a bit later, he moves on to Mothership, Dirtybird’s other sick label to which Tanner also belongs to, and gets Bar 13 all hyped up with ItaloboyzBahia (aka the John Coltrane shizzie). After Tanner Ross gets everybody even more pumped up, it is time for Soulclap to jump behind the decks.
Soulclap played phucking amazing too! They even played one of my favorite tracks of the moment that I first saw Heidi destroy back at Studio B and then Sammy D at Old Miami in Detroit, Phreaky MF by Mike Dunn. You can listen to it here, but support the artists and get it on beatport (note the spelling). I was also very pleased by the crowd’s reaction to die Ente original which got them all quacking like they should (check it out under releases- hit us up to buy the vinyl in advance).
Huge thanks to the Boston crew for coming down when they needed to be back the early the next day for DOTC (Dancing on the Charles) their outdoor riverside summer party.
Now that summer is here our weekends have been extended to include a sunday afternoon of partying. The minimoo crew has made its summer debut creating a paradise in the skies with a sun deck full of hidden gardens and a nice line up of DJs to keep the crew dancing through the lightning, rain, and carefully planned fireworks. It can be 95° or the middle of a lightening storm, but there are certain pleasures that make it worth getting a little soaked and the increased odds of getting hit or being around when those zeus powered bolts hit (maybe striking a huge water tank or a near by police station). The heat did not stop people from having a good time…
As usual minimoo creates a very personal and private environment for us to a enjoy a strong musical line up which included Poker Flat and Cadenza’s Guido Schneider, Function who is also behind the Sandwell District label (check out the RA interview and feature) and minimoo’s own Memek, who is rapidly turning into one of NYC’s favorite DJs.
It will be exciting to see Memek and of course Guido Schneider perform at Minitek the upcoming NYC electronic music festival, featuring many many more big names, our very own Fase Miusic Sender and more of the Argentine family with a very special debut US live set for Dilo vs Gurtz.
Smagghe has always been THE character though, working for Rough Trade, Paris’ most influential record stores in the day. In 1997, Ivan was a founding member of Black Strobe with Arnaud Rebotini and also producing remixes under Volga Select with fellow Marc Collin.
Here is a snipet of Volga Select’s remix of Black Strobe’s 2000 Hit, Innerstrings.
Both entities to which Ivan belongs to!
Ivan worked at the highly respected Radio Nova, where he hosted the show “TEST”. Out of which came out four eponymous compilation, each one more excellent than the other. More recently we can distinguish two incredible DJ mixes: his Fabric apparition, N˚23, and the Suck My Deck on Bugged Out!, which was followed by Damian Lazarus‘ edition (yes, I keep saying it to everyone, they are my two favourite DJs on this planet !!)
At night and for many years, the place to see him play, as it remained his longest running residence, was the Parisian lesbian club, the PULP, which closed about a year ago. Nowadays, Ivan moved to London… But but but! He is coming for a very special and rare night in NYC! It will happen at Love and it’s organised by the BLK Market Crew (Maximum Respect). This will be Thursday June 12th. I don’t care if you guys have to miss out work on Friday, call in sick, or stumble your way to the office, this is a NO MISS.
To warm you up, why dont you click your way to GetTheCurse.com, a french blog we like a lot and download Ivan Smagghe’s recording of his last set at the Rex, Paris’ legendary club, on April 24th. Its Raw and Dope, as usual. Also be on the look out for Ivan’s new remix of Simon Baker’s “X, Y & Z” track on Leftroom, its amazing and sounds like children jumping from the orphanage’s roof. He did the remix with Mark Ashken and Matt Tolfrey. Here is a preview:
It started on a sunny sunday and ended on a dark monday. We all lined up eager to board the Queen of Hearts at Pier 40 for a ku-deta & reSOLUTE boat tour of NYC and a special Clink showcase. The lineup was pretty big and brought in some Clink’s biggest talent. Afternoon Coffee Boys (live) was definitely one of the better moments on the boat. Tony Rohr and Tim Xavier, the pirate duo hijacked the boat with there mezmerizing minimal techno beats. O and at one point they played this loop that said “techno,” listen carefully in the video below:
The party came to an end when we reached the pier around 930 after Tony gave the after party destination. Everyone headed to Bar 13 at their own pace. Insideout and Alexi Delano pretty much tagged team it through 1ish with great dynamics between the two and with more appropriate for their dark destroy everything minimal techno, maybe they should start up a duo called “Night time Tequila Addicts”? (just a suggestion)
The only problem with the afterparty, which became apparent after spending time on the dancefloor was that most people truly thought we were still on the boat. I could feel the waves sending me from left to right, even though bar 13 is on 13th and University place, so pretty far from the water. In fact, I would say I got boat sick at Bar 13 and apparently so did others from the reSOLUTE crew (no need to say more)
Moral of the story: Everybody was in a great mood, the sun was shining and the Manhattan skyline really is… blurry, (check out some more of the pics), after parties are fun and wild and, best of all.. there are more boat parties coming (next unmissable one is on June 15th with the Italoboyz presented this time by BLK market membership).
Also keep a look out for the next reSOLUTE party on June 14th, its coming up quick and will be with Pheek (check his interesting blog) who is coming back to play for them after their DEMF party… This weekend will be crazy as well with a variety of options on Friday June 6th from Andrew Weatherall and Adultnapper at Bar 13, roof parties, or also Half Hawaii (Bruno Pronsato & Sammy Dee) with Jan Krueger and JamesPatrick at the Bunker. Then Sunday is another tough choice between the rhythmism party and a minimoo party with Guido Schneider as well…
